Corruption has almost become inevitable worldwide and it has invaded every subtle government there could be since the archaic times. Every country has its own dose of corruption—no matter how big or small the situation or no matter how poor or rich the country is. However, there are certain countries that have been better than others in terms of mitigating risks and possible problems that corruption can give. Corruption is like a viral disease; it spreads down to the bottom of the food chain from whoever is seated at the throne of power. These countries have exerted more effort in ensuring that corruption will not affect all the communities in the country and that scenes of corruption will be contained. On a reality’s view, corruption has been a worldwide predicament that until now, no further solution can be achieved.
Here is a list of the ten least corrupt countries in the world. These countries were ranked by the Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index 2012. Using the rate scale of zero to 100, these countries have successfully controlled their corruption situation for the time being.
10. Netherlands
A constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, it consists of 12 provinces in North-West Europe and three islands in the Caribbean. Being able to get a score of 84 from the scale of Corruption Perceptions Index, Netherlands has been proven to be one of the least corrupt countries in the world. Globally, Netherlands is known for its existing tradition of social tolerance as well as for its neutrality. What is even more admirable about this country is the fact that its judicial system is independent, thus, there are less chances of taking any side. It is also believed that the entire make up of their judicial system is free of corruption. The world should better start looking up to Netherlands as a role model country.
9. Canada
This country is a North American country consisting of ten provinces and three territories. Canada received the same score as the Netherlands which resulted in it earning the ninth spot on the Corruption Perception Index. So far, the Canadians are happy with their government as they can enjoy their basic rights and they have the freedom and liberty to adore their country. The Canadian government has been very progressive in suppressing corruption in their country.
8. Norway
This country is a Scandinavian unitary constitutional monarchy whose territory compromises the Western portions of the Scandinavian Peninsula, Jan Mayen and the Arctic Archipelago. Norway got the eighth spot on the list and is known for providing adequate proper training to their officials and officers on the consequences of corruption. The country’s Ministry of Defense, Erik Lund-Isaksen, once said that their ministry is dedicated to drive its initiatives against corruption and to totally wipe it out. The country takes pride in its legal framework, code of conduct, and the values they uphold. These values serve as the guide of officers and officials in their service as non-corrupt officials of Norway.
7. Australia
The world’s sixth largest country by total area and a country known by its distinct accent. Australia received the same scoring on the index of 85, which makes it tied with Norway. Basically, Australia and Norway have the same comprehensive guidance to its officials as well as these countries’ ethnic regime, which is why both of them have been effective in preventing corruption in their country. Australia founded an anti-corruption body, Corruption and Crime Commission (CCC), that is solely meant to enhance and uphold the values and integrity of the public sector of the Western Australian area. CCC also assists the country’s public sectors in ensuring that all officials abide by the rules and that they are avoiding any misconduct that may lead to corruption.
6. Switzerland
Also known as the Swiss Confederation is one of the oldest constitutions in the world. Switzerland is known for being able to maintain its high level of anti corruption status throughout the years. This is very impressive for a continuous developing country. The strategy of Switzerland was to give special focus and extra attention to bribery of public officials to discourage people from using this as a common practice to get what they want. It is considered as a criminal offense to bribe a government official; both Swiss and foreign. Switzerland is definitely not the ideal place for bribery and corruption as they take these two negative terms very seriously. Switzerland obtained an 86 on the index.
